                                                                Lawang Sewu

Hello everyone, my name is Namira Hasnalma Aisyah and I am from 27 Senior High School class X Science 3. So, today I will tell you about a historical place called Lawang Sewu.

Lawang Sewu is a historical building that owned by PT Kereta Api Indonesia. This building was originally used as the head office of the private railway company. This building was built on an area of 18.232 m2. It started on February 27, 1904 and finished in July 1907 for the main building and the additional building was built around 1916 and finished in 1918.

The building was designed by Prof Jakob F. Klinkhamer and B. J. Ouendag, an architect from Amsterdam with a dominant characteristic of curved and simple elements. The building resemble the letter L and have many windows and doors. Because of the many doors, Lawang Sewu means a thousand doors. Lawang Sewu has a stained glass that tell about the prosperity and beauty of Java, Dutch rule over Semarang and Batavia, maritime cities and the triumph of railways. Other decorations include pottery ornaments, a small dome and a spire decorated with bronze.

Currently, the building is used as a museum, presenting various collections from the era of railways in Indonesia. The collection include, Alkmaar colection, Edmonson machines, calculating machines and others. Near the exit there is a library filled with book about trains. Apart from being a historical places tourist spot, Lawang Sewu can also he rented for exhibition activities, meeting rooms, and others.
